Bye Elder Robb :(

photo (11)

I’m sure you’re familiar with the “Mormon Missionaries” who spend 2 years of their lives sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ around the world.  These are the Elders in our area right now…Elder Robb, Elder Westwood and Elder Osmond.  They are GREAT!  Briggs turns 8 in October and in our church we are baptized when you turn 8. Why? Well, at 8, you’re old enough to know the difference between right and wrong, old enough to make your own decisions yet young enough to be guided by those decisions before outside influences take over---ie peer pressure, media etc… So, a few months ago we were talking to Briggs about being baptized and he said, “I’m not sure if I want do be baptized.” It caught us a little bit off guard but is a legitimate question.  We’re big on the “free agency” thing in our house so we decided to have the missionaries come and teach him, just like they would anyone else who is wanting to know about our church and the basics of the gospel. Or even if you’re just curious about what those guys in white shirts and ties do, or what those crazy Mormons REALLY believe. Smile(yep…I’m one of those crazy Mormons!) Basically, we want Briggs to make the decision whether or not to be baptized.  The thing that I’ve found impressive is that there is NO pressure in these lessons.  They are simple, on his level, but they always come back to telling Briggs that he has to pray about it, study it out and get his own answer, through the Holy Spirit, that being baptized is the right thing.  It’s been a really neat experience for him and for our older kids too.

Chuck and I obviously are very firm in our faith and in our testimonies of the Savior.  It is the greatest gift that we have---it brings peace, comfort, shelter from trials, direction, hope and joy.  We want our children to have that in their lives too and we try to have a home where those things can be taught and where they can develop their own testimony of and relationship with Jesus Christ. This has been a great experience because they are seeing that they get to decide for themselves and that as long as they put in the efforts of study and prayer, those answers will come.

It was really neat when Briggs came in from school the other day and had his Book of Mormon in his backpack…he’s been reading it on the bus.  (we have those cool children’s readers of the Book of Mormon & Bible that are on the kids level---I highly recommend them) He’s taking this really seriously…he even said tonight that he’s still deciding about baptism and that’s ok by me.  I want him to know for himself.

Ok, so that turned into a NOVEL---sorry, didn’t mean for it to be so long, but it IS my blog so I guess that’s ok, right? Smile  So, my main point (which was OVERTAKEN by my other point…) is that Elder Robb is being transferred to another area….Anadarko….and we’re really going to miss him.  You’d think that these 19-21 year old guys would be a bunch of goof balls, right? Not so…they take their missions very seriously (not that they don’t have fun because they do!  What you don’t see in this picture is Elders Westwood and Robb downing the top scoop of their ice cream cone in one swallow---just after the picture was taken)---it’s  a choice, one they PAY for---that’s right, they are NOT paid to go on missions---they pay their own expenses. That’s how convicted they are and God blesses them with a great spirit to teach His gospel.  They are wonderful!  So, having been a missionary myself, and looking at my own children who will hopefully go on missions too, if they come to your door, can I make a heartfelt request?  Let them in---they are good people who bring a special spirit with them. Be polite---you don’t have to agree, in fact you may have to “agree to disagree” but that’s ok. I think you’ll find that you have more in common with them than you might think….Offer them a drink of water---they work long hours, rain or shine. Your kindness will be much appreciated.  Share your beliefs. Let them share ours.  Thanks…for letting me share. Smile

Our first Circus….I mean Rodeo! :)

My friend Darcey and her family are an awesome Rodeo family. Chuck and the Kids love horses so we’ve been trying to go to one of their rodeo’s for a long time.  It finally worked out on Saturday and we really had a great time. First, I’m amazed at all that Darcey does for her kids….wow!  Second, I’m amazed at Cady and Dalen…they are super talented!  Third, I think my family should have been born on a ranch!!!  They totally loved it.  Check out the pictures below….

Ok, so the funniest thing is that this morning, Lydia says to me, “Mom, when is your consultant (Darcey is in my unit) going to come back and take me to the circus so I can ride on Honey and M&M (aka Skittles---not quite the same, but it’s all candy, right?)?  Darcey loved it because her life truly can be a circus!

Thanks for sharing your rodeo world with us, Darcey…we are true wannabe’s!

Our talented kids….takes me back.

If you know Chuck’s and my story, we met in 7th Grade band…he was first chair trumpet and I was first chair clarinet (most of the time…Robert Nash and Lia Hinkle gave me a run for my money!) so we got to stare across the room at each other (dang he was cute! Oh wait…this post is supposed to be about my kids…… Smile)

so going to our kids band concert is nostalgic. (Weird to think they could be meeting their future spouse there….uuuggghghhhhh….shudder!)  My parents were able to come to this one and they said the same thing.

They did an amazing job though. I’m pretty sure Liam’s 6th grade band sounded better than our 9th grade band ever did! (Sorry, Mrs. Stark!)  Plus they had fun so that makes it even better.

Smile)  (Amy---I’m still jealous of your Strawberry Cheesecake cone---but I did get myself a whole container of tonight so I think I’ll be ok! Smile)  So grateful for good friends.

Our HAPPY Week!

The second week of May is always a happy one in our house…but it wasn’t always that way.  I used to be annoyed that Mother’s Day, Our Anniversary and Chuck’s birthday were all in the same week…sometimes I felt “gyped” of Mother’s Day.  Then I realized that all the things that mean the most to me are celebrated in that one week.  So now it’s my Happy Week!
Mother’s Day was wonderful….I came home from a Mary Kay event Saturday morning and the house we SPOTLESS!  Now that makes a HAPPY MOMMY! The next morning I got to sleep in and then had my favorite breakfast made for me…German pancakes!  Church was great and everyone even got ready without arguing…ahhh…VERY happy Mommy!
When we got home I was forced out of the kitchen to read & rest while Chuck and the kids made dinner.  2 hours later a yummy dinner was ready. Thanks guys!!! But the best gift of all was when Chuck was talking to my mom and said, “From start to cleanup, it took my 4 hours to do dinner!  It’s a lot of work….I don’t know how she does it! I have a renewed appreciation for what Maria does.”  Awwwww…..such a sweet thing to say. Smile

This is the flower that Lydia colored for me in Primary.  It had little things she loves about me.  They were all cute but the best one was….

My Mom Is Good At: ‘doing flips on the trampoline’!

I laughed SOOOOO hard! I haven't done trampoline flips for years...not quite sure what she's hoping for but it made me smile...and laugh...out loud...for a long time! :)

Chuck turned 39 on the 15th...he's SO old! :) The kids made decorated the house and we made treats for him that he could open with his gifts.  He's a pretty awesome Daddy so he deserved it all!

That night we went to Boulevard Steakhouse---I had a groupon so we saved a little bit of money but it was a pricey night!  Worth it, though, according to Chuck.  He had that "relaxed" feeling again---the same one that he had while we were on our Anniversary trip in Eureka Springs.  That gift is worth anything.  Love, love, love having my husband feel relaxed and happy on his birthday.

Yep…we framed a house!

If you know me, you know that I can change a light bulb and that’s about it! So, when our women’s group at church (it’s called the Relief Society) announced that we’d be helping with a Habitat for Humanity house build, I was supportive  but honestly---REALLY NERVOUS!  But being in the Relief Society Presidency, I was kind of expected to be there. Then we found out we’d be doing exterior painting and I settled down---“I can do that”, I thought.  But no….other plans were in place because it rained like crazy the day before and it was too wet to paint.  So, ya….we framed a house!  If you would have EVER told me that I’d be helping frame a house, with 20 other friends from my church, I seriously would have LAUGHED OUT LOUD! Smile  But WE DID IT!  Obviously, we  had a lot of direction from experienced home builders but we did it.  It was a great experience, had fun working with my friends and loved meeting the home owner---so glad to be a part of it. What a wonderful organization! I would recommend that EVERYONE volunteer and help their group…can’t wait to do it again!

p.s. and yes those are the Mormon Helping Hands bright, yellow tshirts.  Not so flattering but we wore them proudly!
